Signs of hope on cycle 'corridor'

Work on the planned Worthing to Goring cycle route is set to begin this spring with the introduction of signs and advisory cycle lanes.

The initial work will cost about £24,200 while phase two - which, it is hoped, will begin within a year of the first phase - will require an estimated £50,000.

The partnership scheme between West Sussex County Council and Worthing Borough Council aims to improve conditions for cyclists through one of the town's most popular cycle corridors.

When complete, it will offer a cycle crossing at Mulberry Lane, Goring, and separate provision for cycles at and on the approaches to the roundabout at the Goring Road/George V Avenue junction and also at the traffic signal junction at Shaftesbury Avenue.

There will be a cycle crossing to provide a right turn from Goring Road into Wallace Avenue and changes will be made to the layout of the crossroads junction of Lansdowne Road with Grand Avenue, to reduce traffic speeds and improve visibility. Junction priority at Downview Road and Lansdowne Road will be altered to east-west.

It is hoped that approval for Worthing Borough Council's 50 per cent share of the phase two money - £25,000 - will be given at the planning committee meeting on Tuesday, March 14.
