Worthing Cycle Campaign > VOCAL

VOCAL

VOCAL (Voices Of Children About Leisure) are a group who are campaigning for improved leisure facilities in Worthing, particularly places that are safe to cycle. They raised a one-thousand signature petition, which was presented to the Borough Council.

Their Leaflet

VOICES OF CHILDREN ABOUT LEISURE

Like me as a parent, you pay your dues to help the local community.- How much of this is actually going towards recreation for children? How many times have your children come home saying they had been told not to ride their bikes here; rollerblade there; or make too much noise somewhere else? - the list goes on.

HISTORY:Worthing has been a place of retired people.
PRESENT:There are many families with children helping to keep the local economy buoyant.
 SO WHERE CAN THEY PLAY?

It is time that the parents and children made their voices heard and petitioned for more facilities. Places where they can safely cycle, rollerblade and just be children. Children cannot just be sent out onto a busy road with the hope that nothing untoward will happen. Times and traffic have changed, and so too should Worthing's antiquated Bylaws.

Our children are our future and we have to look after them. Worthing has a duty to look after them so that present and future generations, young and old can enjoy this town with tolerance and in harmony.

If you have any suggestions for facilities, please contact:

The Council's Response

The response, in the form of a report from Worthing Borough Council, could be summarised as "Go away, and stop bothering us". It contained no actions to be taken that would improve the situation. It is true that WBC cannot do much about the road system in Worthing, but at least they could have included actions to get WSCC to spend even a little bit of money on Worthing's cyclists!
